| Star Trek 2009 |
[Jun. 5th, 2009|10:20 am] |
I originally posted this so I could link it to my facebook page, but I realized that I really should post it here. Mostly so I can stop writing book-long replies on everyone else's reviews of the film.
I'm finally getting around to admitting how much I love the new Star Trek movie. :) Everyone knows I'm an epic Star Wars fan, but not everyone knows that my sci-fi roots are firmly grounded aboard the starship Enterprise (NCC-1701). Star Wars entertained me, but it was Star Trek that taught me.
This will probably sound silly, but as a girl raised solely by her mother, Star Trek gave me male role models. I could probably write some lengthy essays on this phenomenon. In fact, I think this is probably the reason I never could write fanfiction in the Trek-verse, and also why I didn't have any interest in the whole Trekkie sci-fi convention culture. It wasn't really a "fandom" to me, not back then anyway. What I learned from the interactions and friendship of Kirk, Spock and McCoy isn't something easily condensed into a paragraph or two. Let's just say it made them pretty significant iconic figures in my young life. Having no other masculine frame of reference, I grew up believing their friendship is the way men should act and interact with each other. (And no, slash didn't enter in at all - it was more than OK for these three very strong men to care deeply for one another in a non-romantic, filial way.)
Anyway... enough about my psyche... Onward to the new movie...
If those actors ever say they didn't study the original actors... they lie! Too much imitation/perfection going on there. The fangirl in me absolutely loved the effort they put into doing this (enough to have paid to see it three times already in the balcony at the Warren). Without that kind of respect for the Original Series - and the tremendous effort the actors put into continuity for the characters, I believe this movie... I won't say it would have failed because it was a good storyline... but it definitely would not have been Star Trek for me.
I remember having reservations about the people they picked for the new cast. I won't say these folks are all perfect, but they did an especially good job with the dynamic trio...
I am now convinced that Zachary Quinto could rule the universe. That man's physical resemblance to Leonard Nimoy is uncanny (his eyes and his body style especially). I love that he readily admits he has huge respect for Nimoy. I also think it is very, very cool that he pursued a "mentor/student" relationship with Spock's first creator (I guess I should say "Spock Prime" like everyone else in the fandom). If he has a typical "actor's ego" I'm convinced he set it aside to get Spock right for all the fans. There are no words for how much I appreciate that. Without a doubt, he was the best new cast member and the shining star of the new film. Along that line... I picked up the novelization last week after seeing the movie, but then when I was at Barnes & Noble Sunday I noticed the 20% off sticker on the audio book. I almost passed it by til I saw that Quinto was the reader. I wonder if this means I'm addicted... And if I needed any other reason to fall for him, his admission that he was a Star Wars fan growing up would only seal the deal.
Now... about Kirk... Chris Pine did a good job with him. Solid. It could only have been better if Shatner had offered him the same mentor relationship Nimoy gave to Quinto (though I understand how he felt and why he kept his distance from the project). The thing is, Kirk was my absolute favorite Trek character, and also my first crush. I'm sorry, but this means my expectations from Pine were higher than for any other new cast member. He didn't disappoint me, but he didn't blow me away either. Still, he worked hard to keep Kirk's mannerisms consistent with the original character and that effort alone won me over. One thing though... I kept feeling that something was wrong but I couldn't put my finger on it til I read the novelization. Yep, Kirk's eyes are brown. Pines are clear blue. I'm sure I'll get over it. :P At least the kid can act, ya know?
And Dr. McCoy... I was really concerned about this character, especially when they cast *gasp* Eomer of Rohan in the role. You know what? He did a great job too. His physical resemblance to Deforest Kelley wasn't as strong as what some of the other actors had, but he worked really hard to get the "old country doctor" color and character down. I was surprised at how he pulled off many of Bones' mannerisms and expletives. Once or twice during the entire movie I thought he was trying a little too hard, but a surplus of effort I can easily forgive. :)
Do I buy the "reboot"? Well, I'll probably always live in Spock Prime's ST universe. However, I'm immensely glad to have Star Trek return to the world in all its glory and I'm looking forward to seeing just what they plan to do with the franchise in the future. Heh, maybe I'll find with the new cast that I can actually write fanfiction in that world. |

| "Phantom of the Death Star" anyone? |

If you are not a fan of Star Wars and Phantom of the Opera you will likely not properly appreciate this. I am both, so I thought it was pretty cool. :)

I think this is an April Fools' joke, but a friend tells me that folks are petitioning Lucasfilm to please make it a reality... I have to say, if they do I definitely want one... no idea what I'll do with it. Maybe I can borrow a kid temporarily...

Well, we finally made it home from the hospital yesterday without any major glitches or events! :) It looks like the fluid pockets in mom's lungs are shrinking (the right side one is gone and the left are on their way out too) and her breathing has improved alot. Her stats (pulse, blood pressure, O2 saturation) looked good too, even without supplemental oxygen, so the Doc wanted to send her home before - in his words - she caught something really awful there at the hospital. Works for us!
So far we're doing really well. Looks like we won't need to keep the home O2 unit we rented past the 30 days we have it. Mom is also reconsidering whether or not she really needs the in-home health service. Barring unforseen complications I should even be able to go back to work next week. :) |
